What Defines a Winter Grower?

A winter grower actively vegetates through the cooler months (autumn to spring) and goes dormant in the heat of summer. The cycle mirrors their native range in the Succulent Karoo and the winter-rainfall regions of South Africa and Namibia.

Unlike an Echeveria that merely slows down in winter, Othonna and Tylecodon want their peak care, water and light, exactly when the rest of your garden is asleep. Getting your head around that reversed clock is the single most important thing you can do to keep them alive.

Why do they grow in winter?

They evolved to photosynthesize and store water during the mild, wet winters of the Cape Floristic Region so they could survive the scorching, bone-dry summers. If they tried to grow through that native summer heat, they’d simply desiccate and die. By shedding leaves and shutting down in summer, they hoard moisture in their caudices and thick stems.

How Much Light Do They Need?

Direct sunlight is non-negotiable for healthy, compact growth.

The winter sun in the Northern Hemisphere sits low on the horizon and passes through more atmosphere, so it’s much weaker than summer sun. What reads as “bright light” to us is often deep shade to a plant built for the African desert.

Can they grow in low light?

No. Without high-intensity light, these plants etiolate fast. In Tylecodons the stems go weak and spindly, permanently ruining that bonsai look.

Othonnas, especially the purple types like O. capensis, turn green and stretch into weak strings.

Do I need grow lights?

For most indoor growers in the US, yes. Unless you have an unobstructed south-facing window in a sunny state like Arizona or California, natural winter light is rarely enough. A full-spectrum LED run 10–12 hours a day is the standard for keeping growth tight and natural-looking.

When and How Should You Water?

Water them only while they’re actively growing, and stop the moment they signal dormancy.

Soak-and-dry is the gold standard: water thoroughly until it runs out the drainage hole, then wait until the soil is 100% dry before watering again.

How do I know when to start watering?

Wait for the “green signal” in late summer or early autumn. As nights cool (below about 60°F/15°C) and days shorten, you’ll see tiny green leaves pushing out of the seemingly dead stems. That’s the wake-up call.

Start with a light splash to nudge the roots awake, and once leaves are developing in earnest, resume deep watering.

You rot the plant. Tylecodons are especially vulnerable because their thick stems hold so much water. Water while the soil is still wet, or worse, water during summer dormancy, and the roots suffocate and rot races up the stem almost overnight.

The simplest way to hold both halves of the year in your head: in winter, water deeply whenever the mix goes fully dry; in summer, give essentially nothing, just enough humidity that the plant doesn’t shrivel to nothing.

Soil & Potting Secrets

You need a mix that’s at least 70–80% mineral grit. These plants grow in rock crevices, not potting soil, and a heavy peat-based mix holds water far too long, which is a death sentence in cool weather.

What is the best soil recipe?

A gritty mix is ideal. Combine 70–80% inorganic material (pumice, lava rock, coarse sharp sand, or akadama) with 20–30% organic (a good succulent soil or coco coir). That structure lets water rush through, wetting the roots but leaving air pockets for oxygen.

Clay or Plastic Pots?

Unsealed terracotta is the safest choice. Its porous walls let moisture evaporate from the sides, giving you a buffer against overwatering. Plastic holds water much longer and should only be used if your mix is extremely gritty (90%+ mineral).

Tylecodon Specifics (The Poisonous Beauty)

Tylecodons are pachycauls, meaning they have thick, swollen stems that work as water reservoirs.

Are they dangerous?

Yes. Tylecodons are highly toxic. They contain cumulative neurotoxic bufadienolides, a class of cardiac glycosides, and in South Africa they cause “krimpsiekte” (shrinking disease) in livestock.

Because the toxins are cumulative, repeated small exposures add up. Always wash your hands after handling broken stems or leaves, and keep these plants strictly away from curious pets and children.

Why do the leaves drop?

Leaf drop is the main sign of dormancy. As spring temperatures climb, Tylecodon leaves yellow and fall, leaving the bare, gnarled stems behind. That’s natural, not sickness.

Don’t water to try to save the leaves, or you’ll rot the plant.

Othonna Specifics (The Daisy Cousins)

Othonnas come in a wider range of forms, from trailing baskets to strange caudiciform shrubs.

Why does my Othonna look like a pickle?

Species like Othonna clavifolia and O. herrei store water in swollen leaves or stems, which gives some of them that lumpy, pickle-like look. Unlike Tylecodons, which are Crassulaceae (the stonecrop family), Othonnas are Asteraceae (the daisy family), and their small yellow, dandelion-like flowers appear right through winter.

Can they tolerate frost?

Generally no. They come from desert regions, but they aren’t frost-hardy. Temperatures below 30°F (-1°C) turn their water-filled cells to mush, so keep them above 40°F (4°C) to be safe.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

The Mushy Stem

What to look for: The base of the stem feels soft and squishy, or looks black.

How to fix it: This is rot. If it’s at the base, the plant is usually a loss, but you can try cutting the healthy tip off, letting it callus for a week, and rooting it as a cutting.

Why it works: Rot spreads from its source, so cutting well above it removes the infected tissue and gives the clean tip a chance.

The Stretched Neck (Etiolation)

What to look for: New growth is pale, thin, and reaching toward the light.

How to fix it: Move the plant into stronger light immediately, or add a grow light.

Why it works: The plant is stretching to reach the “sun” it thinks is being blocked. You can’t un-stretch the existing growth, but everything new will come in compact.
